Summer is coming to an end, but if you’re anywhere near the Lake Erie Shores & Islands area, there is still plenty to do and enjoy! My family and I recently took a day trip to Put-In-Bay, Ohio by way of the Miller Ferry from Sandusky, Ohio and had an absolute blast. Our group of 7 ranged in ages from 67 to 2, yet everything we did was fun for all!
I was not financially compensated for this post. I received complimentary tickets for the Miller Ferry. These are my own honest opinions.
If you’re not familiar with Put-In-Bay, it is an island on Lake Erie that is absolutely chalk-full of fun things to do. If you don’t have your own boat, there are two ways to get to the island – either the Miller Ferry or the Jet Express. Both have different pricing and schedules but both ultimately get you to the island, where you’ll have so much to choose from to fill your day!
We traveled via the Miller Ferry and my girls absolutely loved it. The weather was absolutely perfect on the day we went and our ferry ride over to the island was the perfect way to kick the day off.
Once we reached the island, our first item of business was to rent a golf cart. Walking the island is an option, but you’re going to see a lot more a lot faster if you have a golf cart. This was probably the highlight of the day for my girls, as they loved just cruising the island on our huge 8-passenger golf cart.
NOTE: The rental company we used did have car seats to use, had we not brought our own. I cannot speak for all golf cart rentals on the island, so I would suggest carrying a seat onto the Jet Express or Miller Ferry with you if you plan to rent a golf cart.
After we were all set with our golf cart, we headed to the Heineman’s Winery. We saw that they offered crystal cave tours and we thought this would be a really neat thing for the girls to see.
I will be honest and say that we would skip the Crystal Cave tour next time. It cost us $6 each and the of the crystal cave was about 5 minutes long. You went down into the cave, saw the crystals, and climbed back up. It was neat to see, but I would try the Gem Mining next time instead. We did receive a token for a free sample of grape juice or wine, so we all sat out in the courtyard at the winery and enjoyed our samples.
Right across the street was the Butterfly House, which my girls were insistent on visiting. I am so glad that we did – it was so much fun and the gardens and butterflies were just beautiful!
One even landed right on my 4-year old’s shoe as she was taking a rest on a bench in the Butterfly House!
By the time we finally came out of the Butterfly House and made our way into “downtown”, everyone was ready for some lunch, so we headed over to The Keys. The atmosphere was so lively and fun and the food was downright delicious – think Conch Fritters, Lobster Salad Sliders and more! From our seats my girls could see the playground in the main park area and begged to head there next. They ran and played and had a ball for nearly an hour! When they were done playing, it was time to head over to the Carousel for a fun ride.
During the rest of our day we took a nice tour of the island in our golf cart, literally from end to end. We visited the Aquatic Center, where my girls were able to fish off the dock for free! While they didn’t catch anything, it was a memory making moment that everyone enjoyed.
Lastly we decided that a sweet of some sort was in order before we headed back to the Miller Ferry, so we stopped at DJ’s Ice Cream on Toledo Avenue, which was such a treat. The ice cream was delicious and they had the most spectacular outdoor eating space. Once their bellies were full, my girls decided to lounge before getting back onto the golf cart.
There are so many other things to do on Put-In Bay and our day trip didn’t even really scratch the surface. We cannot wait to return next year and do even more. In fact, there is so much to do in the entire Lake Erie Shores & Islands area and you can view all of what they offer here. When planning your next day-trip or weekend getaway in the Northern Ohio area, I highly recommend you see what #LakeErieLove is all about!
