O’Kims brings modern Korean cooking to Hawaii
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - There is no shortage of traditional Korean restaurants in Honolulu, but one eatery in Chinatown has won over foodies with its modern twist on Korean cuisine.
Hyun Kim, chef-owner of O’Kims Korean Kitchen, joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about her contemporary Korean dishes that resonate with younger generations in South Korea, putting her spin on kalbi steak, bibimbap, grilled salmon, spicy chicken with gnocchi, and pork belly.
She said she uses natural, healthy ingredients sourced from Hawaii to support local farmers and sustainability. The Busan native developed a lifelong passion for cooking and began her career at 16. She studied Korean, Japanese, and international cuisines in South Korea, and moved to Honolulu to pursue Culinary Arts at Kapiolani Community College.
She’s worked at Chef Mavro, 53 by the Sea, Morimoto, Gokoku Sushi, Vintage Cave, and Trump International Hotel, and opened the first O’Kims in 2016.
