HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A health clinic was unveiled Wednesday at Waipahu High School.

OB-GYN’s from Hawaii Pacific Health and UH medical school physicians will run the Academic Health Center alongside more than 500 students.

The state Department of Education said this is the first school-based clinic in the country where students help provide care while directly learning from physicians and medical professionals.

Students in the school’s Health & Sciences Academy will have the opportunity to shadow physicians and gain real-life experiences in roles ranging from administrative to clinical positions.

In addition, the DOE said students in the Academy of Arts & communication were asked to create artwork to decorate the facility and the school’s culinary students are engaged with the clinic around nutrition.

The nearly 1,900 square-foot center has four exam rooms and one treatment room. It previously housed the school’s adult education center.

Appointments open later this week.
