HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii artists are on a mission to beautify public school campuses and inspire the next generation to tap into their creativity.

The 12th annual mural festival “Hawaii Walls” is at three Kalihi schools this year — Farrington High School, Kalihi Kai Elementary, and Puuhale Elementary.

A network of locally and globally recognized artists, primarily women, are participating in the festival, including Ella Wong, Lauren YS, Dina Saadi, Kris Goto, Punky Aloha, Allison Bamcat, Ninja Sketch, Giorgiko, Satr, Evah Fan, Hera of Herakut, Hyun Dinh and more.

The artists are creating and donating over 40 new murals to the schools.

World Wide Walls, formerly known as POW! WOW!, says their goal is to also showcase and celebrate the diverse cultures in the Kalihi and Palama districts.

“The Kalihi neighborhood holds a special place in my heart having spent a significant amount of time there growing up and with my mom’s grocery store and bakery across from Farrington High School,” said World Wide Walls Founder Jasper Wong.

“It is my hope that the impact of the festival will transcend the art that’s created there and instill a sense of pride in our community.”

The festival will also feature an exhibition curated by Thinkspace at Gangway Gallery, talks with Lauren YS, Hera, and Ninja Sketch, parties with Kekoa Collective, photo show with their School of Photography run by Ja Tecson, and a party located at the White Sands Hotel in Waikiki.

Hawaii Walls runs from Sept. 16 to Sept. 22.
