First Alert Forecast: Big surf declining as trade winds make a return

Trades set to strengthen as huge surf lowers.

Trade winds are returning for the first few days of the week and will be breezy for some spots. Expect a slight increase in windward and mauka showers Monday, especially for Kauai, as a shallow boundary of moisture approaches from the northwest.

For the second half of the week, winds will become light again with a pattern of daytime sea breezes and nighttime land breezes. Conditions will be on the dry side, so very little rainfall is expected.

An extra-large northwest swell will persist overnight and remain at or above warning levels into Monday before lowering to advisory levels by Tuesday. The High Surf Warning will continue for most north and west shores until at least 6 a.m. Monday. We have a First Alert for another big northwest swell Thursday and Friday, but it is not expected to be as big as Sunday’s ‘Eddie’-sized swell.
