Investigation underway following fatal shooting in Maili

MAILI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A homicide investigation is underway following a shooting in Maili Thursday night that left a 28-year-old man dead.

It happened at around 9 p.m. near Maili Community Park.

Loved ones identified the victim as Jonah Slawson, and gathered at the scene on Maliona Street to mourn his death.

Police say the victim was with friends at a residence there when several gunshots were fired from a white Toyota Camry that drove past the group.

Honolulu EMS said the victim was shot in his lower body. Crews transported him to Queen’s Medical Center - West Oahu in critical condition where he later died.

A vacant residence and three nearby vehicles were also damaged as a result of the shooting, sources said.

Loved ones gathered at the scene where Jonah Slawson, 28, was killed.

Residents say they’re saddened by another violent incident in their neighborhood.

“Just to take my son to school this morning was kind of, you know, it was shocking,” said resident Alfred Kim. “It’s so close to home.”

“I been over here for 40 years and watching everybody grow up, and sometimes they step wrong step, so that happened,” said resident Hongy Vo, known as the Maili Manapua Man.

Waianae resident Hazel Silva said, “We should get more strict with complaints, calls. Police need to come into action quicker, and there should be more arrests. I see fighting a lot.”

Witnesses said the suspect fled in a white Toyota Camry toward Farrington Highway.

No arrests have been made.
