HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Loved ones of a woman who was killed just before Christmas last year held a celebration of life Sunday evening at Artistry in Kakaako until 10 p.m. to keep her legacy alive.

On Dec. 22, 2023, beauty entrepreneur Theresa Cachuela was shot and killed by her husband at Pearlridge Center in front of their young daughter. He fled and later took his own life. Family members said Cachuela had sought help multiple times from police before the shooting, and believe the system failed her.

Earlier this month, loved ones gathered to wrap donated Christmas gifts for Cachuela’s children.

Cachuela’s mother Lucita Ani-Nihoa and family continue to fight for stricter laws to protect domestic violence victims and prevent gun violence.

They’re working with local lawmakers on legislation imposing harsher penalties for violating temporary restraining orders with higher fines, minimum sentences and court-ordered counseling.

They’re also advocating for more funding and support for survivors struggling to leave their abusers.
