Powerful swells lead to several injuries at big wave surf competition

Crews were on standby to retrieve surfers and take them to shore.

WAIMEA BAY (HawaiiNewsNow) - With the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in full swing, the powerful swell has already led to some injuries.

Laura Enever of Australia is now out of the competition after she her board fin left a gash in her leg. HNN was told she was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Mark Healy, a Hawaii surfer, is also out of the big wave competition due to a busted eardrum.

Californian surfer Greg Long chose not to surf in his second heat. HNN was told he had an undisclosed injury. Long won “The Eddie” back in 2009.

As surfers are taken out of the competition, alternates are brought in for a chance to take on the monster waves at Waimea Bay.

According to the National Weather Service, surf could reach up to 50 feet on Oahu’s North Shore, making some dangerous conditions for these watermen and women.
