Ready to ring in the new year with some fireworks? Here’s how to get a permit
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It’s only a matter of time before the world says so long to 2024 and hello to 2025. While many are still out Christmas shopping, others are preparing for the new year.
If you’re planning on ringing in the new year with some firecrackers, make sure you apply for a firecracker permit.
Here’s how you can get it in your area:
Oahu
Fire cracker permits are only available online and must be purchased by Dec. 21. Click here to fill out an application.
Permits must be picked up at the Satellite City Hall that was selected online.
The Kapolei and Windward City locations are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The Ala Moana and Pearlridge locations are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Permits will be available for pick up until the end of the year.
Firecracker sales begin on Dec. 26. and it ends at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Kauai
Visit https://connect.kauai.gov, click on the “Kauai Fire Department” icon, and then click the “Firecracker Permit” icon.
You will need to create an account. If approved, the permit will be emailed to you.
Print the permit and bring it to the Kauai Fire Department Headquarters along with your payment if you opted to not pay online. Checks must be made out to the Director of Finance.
Officials said all permits need to be validated in person at the the Kauai Fire Department headquarters.
Officials recommend using a smartphone or tablet because applicants will need to upload a photo ID.
If you need assistance, KFD said its staff can assist with applying and collecting payment at their headquarters.
Hawaii Island
No details have been given yet.
Maui
A limited amount of firecracker permits will be available at eight locations on Maui, two locations on Lanai and two locations on Molokai.

Firework sales start on Friday, Dec. 27.
If you rather just watch a grand fireworks display, you can either go to the Grand Wailea Resort or Four Seasons Resort Lanai.
Both shows being approximately at 11:59 p.m.

Permit Details
Applicants must be age 18 or older to purchase a permit.
Each permit costs $25.
Those who receive a permit can purchase up to 5,000 individual firecrackers. People can purchase multiple permits.
Fireworks are only allowed to be set off between 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Permits must be visibly displayed while firing.
