HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Rain couldn’t stop the opening ceremony of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

Dozens of surfers gathered for the paddle-out ceremony at Waimea Bay Friday afternoon.

This year, 45 surfers are invited, including 2023 winner Luke Shepardson.

The waiting period runs from Dec. 14 through March 13.

The contest requires a big, consistent swell. It has only run 10 times in the past 40 years.
