HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Spotlight Now welcomed the following guests in studio to discuss the prevalence of domestic violence in our community:

  • Angelina Mercado, Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence executive director,
  • Amanda Pump, Child and Family Service president and CEO, and
  • Sanoe Kaaihue, Women Helping Women executive director.

A recent report by the Hawai‘i State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, called Scars on the Heart, lays out where domestic violence is happening the most. On Oahu, it is the west side of the island. Statewide, Maui County has the highest percentage.

Kaaihue, who lives on Maui, says the stress of the August 2023 wildfires seems to have led to an uptick of domestic violence incidents.
