HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Molokai residents are encouraged to weigh in on a traffic emergency zone hearing for a major highway.

The state Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it wants to declare a traffic emergency zone on Kamehameha V Highway at milepost 18.7.

DOT officials said crews conducted inspections of the roadway and found erosion of the makai embankment, adjacent to the highway.

The emergency zone declaration allows the DOT to expedite the permitting process and do emergency road repairs.

If the road does not get fixed immediately, it could force the highway to close completely, blocking access to Halawa Valley. There is no alternate access to that community.

Those who would like to comment is encourage to attend a virtual public meeting on Friday.

It begins at 1 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.
