Zipper Lane closed for Wednesday commute due to Zipmobile issues
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The morning commute for thousands of Oahu drivers may be extra slow-going Wednesday due to issues with the Zipmobile.
The state Department of Transportation said the Zipper Lane will not open Wednesday because the primary Zipmobile is experiencing mechanical issues.
It is typically open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays to add eastbound capacity on the H-1 Freeway. The mechanical issues started Tuesday, which led to the lane being closed rather late in the day.
HDOT said they used the secondary Zipmobile to close the Zipper Lane Tuesday. They also said the third Zipmobile is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance and is out of service. Without a backup option, they decided to keep the lane closed for Wednesday.
The vendor for the Zipmobiles will be on island Wednesday as they were scheduled to service the third machine. During that time, they will also assist in fixing the primary.
HDOT recommends that westside motorists allow additional time for their morning commute and factor in the added traffic.
Another alternative is to take Skyline.
In order to ride, you’ll need to have a valid HOLO card with funds. Similar to riding TheBus with a HOLO card, riders will need to “tap” their cards on the HOLO card reader. These card readers will be located at the fare gates at the entrance of each station. HOLO card vending kiosks will also be located next to the fare gates. Learn more by clicking here.
