First Alert Weather: Light winds to start the week, with warning-level surf on the horizon
Light and variable winds are expected Monday through Wednesday ahead of a weak front that will move through the islands Thursday. The front will bring a brief round of showers but rainfall totals are expected to be light.
Winds will strengthen a little out of the north and then the northeast with the frontal passage, followed by light to moderate east to northeast winds with scattered windward and mauka showers into the upcoming weekend.
We have a First Alert in surf, where we continue to closely watch an intense hurricane-force low pressure system far to the northwest that is forecast to send a swell fetch capable of pushing waves to dangerous and potentially deadly warning levels anywhere from 25 to 40 feet.
The first of several large northwest swells will build through the day on Tuesday with waves well above the 15-foot advisory threshold, with more swells pushing waves into high surf warning territory by Thursday into the upcoming week. Be on the lookout for First Alerts on high surf advisories and warnings in the next few days.
