HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - May marks National Stroke Awareness Month.

In the United States, strokes are the fifth leading cause of the death whereas in Hawaii, it’s the third leading cause of death.

Michelle Sato, a nurse practitioner on Hawaii Pacific Health’s neurology team, explains the different types of strokes that can occur.

She also shares when and how to recognize when it’s time to call 911 as well as some ways to prevent strokes.
