BWS repairing new main breaks in Waimanalo after fixing 20-inch break
WAIMANALO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Board of Water Supply crews have repaired a 20-inch transmission main break that impacted hundreds of customers and triggered several closures over the weekend.
Water service was restored to most of the Waimanalo community around 3 a.m. Monday.
Even if water is back on, all Waimanalo residents are being asked to only use it for essential needs only to allow the water system to recover.
Shortly after repairing the 20-inch main break, two other breaks were reported nearby.
One is in the parking lot of Waimanalo Apartments Complex on Poalima Street. The other is less than half a mile away on Humuka Loop.
In total, service in five apartment buildings and 14 homes are affected.
Meanwhile, Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School is closed again Monday and parents are being notified.
The 20-inch transmission main break was reported at around 4 a.m. Friday it affected most of the Waimanalo community from Mekia Street to Sea Life Park.
Because of the size and the depth of the main, it took workers 12 hours to reach it without causing further damage, and days to fully repair it.
According to BWS, a transmission main break refers to a rupture in a large water pipe. This means that there’s a break in a primary pipeline that carries large volumes of water across a wider area, potentially causing widespread service disruptions.
