Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living with Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias {Review & Giveaway ~ US}

Thank you to Shelton Interactive for providing me with a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living with Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias, free of charge, for review.  These are my own honest opinions.

I feel that the folks at Chicken Soup for the Soul are able to strike a nerve, good or bad, with nearly everyone through all of their titles and stories within.  This book really hit home hard for me, as my grandpa passed away in 2008 and for years prior to his death he suffered from Alzheimer’s.  It was one of the most difficult things my parents, myself and my grandma ever had to go through on nearly a daily basis.  The caring and compassion my grandmother demonstrated during this time was incredible, as this disease is one of of the most difficult to deal with.

CSS Alzheimers

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living with Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias contains 101 stories of Caregiving, Coping and Compassion that revolve around:

  • Accepting a New Reality
  • What Does it Feel Like?
  • Strategies and Tips for Coping
  • Next Steps and Tough Choices
  • Taking the Journey with your Parent
  • Younger-Onset Alzheimers
  • In Sickness and In Health
  • The Lighter Side
  • New Ways to Make Connections
  • It Takes a Village
  • The Special Bond with Grandchildren

The Next Steps and Tough Choices was probably the section that resonated most with me within this entire book.  Do not mistake that statement – the entire book is amazing, especially if you are in the midst of dealing with Alzheimers in your life in any capacity or have in the past.  What made this section so great to me was hearing others say things that validated what next steps were taken in our family’s situations.  No one wants to feel guilt over the necessity to bring in in-home care … or to place a loved one in a nursing home or other health care facility.  For some who have never been through this situation before, it may seem cold hearted, unnecessary, or the lazy thing to do.  Quite the contrary.  It is one of the bravest … and heart breaking.

If you know someone in your life struggling as they watch a family member or friend go through this disease or one like it, this would be the perfect gift to present them with in their time of emotional need.
